Asim Khan wins court case against Scottish Labour over selection contest

A RIGHTWINGER won his court case against Scottish Labour over a key candidate selection contest yesterday – but could still be barred from taking part.

Asim Khan challenged a change in the “freeze date” by which members must have joined to take part in choosing Labour’s candidate for the Glasgow South West seat at Westminster.

Mr Khan is supported by failed leadership contender Anas Sarwar and hoped to gain the votes of new members who supported Mr Sarwar’s campaign last autumn.

The original freeze date, six months before the selection kick-off, would have let them take part. But it overlooked an earlier selection committee meeting, so was moved back two weeks.

Mr Khan’s court challenge was backed by a group of new members claiming to have been excluded for having Asian names. Scottish Labour rejects this allegation of racism.

Mr Khan may still be excluded after it emerged that an employment tribunal had said he failed to act on harassment allegations at a charity he chaired. He denies any wrongdoing.
