GLASGOW Commonwealth Games organisers faced the wrath of North Lanarkshire villagers yesterday against their plans to put their streets on “lockdown” for a cycle time trial.
Police and private security plan to blockade all traffic in and out of Auchinloch, Chryston, Moodiesburn, Muirhead, Millerston and Stepps on July 31.
“We’ve been told that the village is basically going to be on lock down from 7am until everything’s over with — which could go on until midnight,” Auchinloch resident Deborah Bryson said of the “absolutely shocking” announcement.
“If we want out we have to leave before 7am, which isn’t really practical for people like myself who have children.
“If you have to drop your child off at nursery before going to work, you can’t do that at 6.30am.
“And there are people in the village who need carers — how are they supposed to get in and out?”
A North Lanarkshire Council spokeswoman said that some residents were “disgruntled” at the “necessary” road closures.
