LABOUR MP Jeremy Corbyn teamed up with a Lib Dem counterpart yesterday to applaud the £3.5 million success of the independent East of England Co-operative Society.
The society, which is not part of the troubled national Co-operative Group, chalked up an increased profit over the past year — and was able to distribute the astonishing £3.5m to its members.
Colchester Lib Dem MP Bob Russell and Islington North MP Mr Corbyn tabled a Commons motion praising the major role which the society plays in the economy of Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk.
With a turnover of more than £340 million, the society has created 300 new jobs by bringing local products into its stores direct from the region’s growers and producers.
The MPs’ early day motion welcomes the fact that the society has no debt, is profitable, is growing and employs 5,000 people.
