Yashika Bageerathi deportation 'imminent,' school spokesman warns

Mauritian student claimed asylum after fleeing an abusive relative — but lost status on reaching adulthood

Mauritian A-level student Yashika Bageerathi was facing imminent deportation last night, a spokesman for her school warned.

Ms Bageerathi, whose case has sparked a 175,000-strong, has been detained since March 19 after losing her family asylum status on becoming an adult. She was due to be deported on Mother’s Day but her removal was deferred.

The 19-year-old was due to be driven from Yarl’s Wood Immigration Removal Centre in Bedfordshire to Heathrow airport for an Air Mauritius flight at 9pm.

Ms Bageerathi was described as “very distressed and worried” by the spokesman for north London’s Oasis Academy Hadley.

He added: “She is on her way in the van but I really hope we can keep her here. We’re encouraging everyone to tweet Air Mauritius and to phone them to stop this.”

Ms Bageerathi has already been turned away from two flights back to her home country at the 11th hour.

Star student Ms Bageerathi came to Britain with her mother, sister and brother in 2011 to escape a relative who was physically abusive and claimed asylum last summer.
