London affordable home row escalates

Muswell Hill residents jeer at Boris Johnson during visit

Residents in north London’s Muswell Hill staged a protest yesterday during a visit from Tory Mayor Boris Johnson.

Mr Johnson was greeted with boos and jeers as he visited Muswell Hill for the opening ceremony of new council houses.

Housing campaigners shouted “too little, too late” as Mr Johnson tried championing the only three affordable homes built in the area in the last 22 years.

During the event a member of the audience asked the mayor about those living under non-secure tenancies at West Hendon estate.

“Do you only want well-off people here?” they said.

West Hendon — which currently houses over 680 families — is set to be demolished and replaced with private housing, including a penthouse priced at over £1 million.

Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn raised the question of affordable housing and rent controls at Wednesday’s PMQs.

Prime Minister David Cameron evaded the question offering no solutions to London’s housing crisis.
