Care staff warned off restraint

New rules prevent 'outdated' care

Health officials yesterday brought in new rules they say will prevent the “outdated” and potentially “dangerous” physical restraint of care patients.

The Department of Health regulations urge staff not to pin patients to the ground, as it could dangerously compress the person’ chest and airwaves and put their life at risk.

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) led the campaign for the new rules, which were draw up with health professionals and patients.

“Nobody wants to see a repetition of the horrific events of Winterbourne View,” said RCN chief executive Dr Peter Carter.
