Shots fired in Rio strike clash

Construction workers battled with security staff at Brazil's Olympic Park

Shots were fired on Monday as striking construction workers and security personnel clashed at Rio de Janeiro’s Olympic Park.

Rio Mais, the consortium building Brazil’s Olympic venues, confirmed that random gunshots had been fired as workers and security officers confronted each other.

A work stoppage involving more than 2,000 workers began last Thursday. Rio Mais said it was unclear when work would resume.

“We are worried by the fact we are losing time,” said Rio Olympic organising committee spokesman Mario Andrada.

“Gunshots and violence worry us,” he claimed. “But right now we don’t know where this came from.”

The trade union dispute centres around benefits and working conditions.

Workers also went on strike on Monday in central Rio at the stadium that will be used for athletics at the 2016 Olympics.

The Joao Havelange Olympic Stadium has been closed since last year to fix structural problems with the roof.
