England faces football friendly with Republic of Ireland

FOOTBALL: England will take on the Republic of Ireland in a friendly next June, the Football Association of Ireland and the Football Association announced.

The fixture will take place at the Aviva Stadium on June 7, a week before the Three Lions face Slovenia in their European Championship qualifier.

It will be the first time that England have played in Dublin since crowd trouble caused the referee to abandon a friendly in 1995 after 27 minutes.

TENNIS: Andy Murray will meet with his team today to discuss his next coach.

The Wimbledon champion, whose two-year partnership with Ivan Lendl ended last month, is hoping to have a new coach in place by the French Open.

The Scot said: “I’ll definitely look at it over the next couple of weeks. I don’t plan on playing much tennis for the next week because I haven’t had much time off this year.”

BADMINTON: Britain’s first national badminton league will begin in October with new rules and a new format.

The National Badminton League will consist of six franchises, Badminton England has announced.

Matches will be played to an abbreviated score, including a tie-break set to make it more exciting.

“It’s a game changer for our sport,” said Britain’s former world number one and Olympic silver medallist Nathan Robertson, who retired in 2012.

RUGBY: England winger Josh Charnley will be out for up to two months with a knee injury sustained in Wigan’s Challenge Cup win over Dewsbury.

Charnley, who has topped the Super League try-scoring chart for each of the last two seasons, twisted his knee in the early stages of the Warriors’ 58-6 win over the Rams.

“Josh is going to be out for six to eight weeks,” Warriors head coach Shaun Wane said. “He doesn’t need an operation but needs time off his legs.”
