Campaign to free tied pub tenants unveiled by GMB

Union wants publicans to have the right to buy goods on the open market

General union GMB unveiled a campaign yesterday to help struggling tied pub tenants to be able to buy in goods on the open market.

Tied pubs can only sell goods dictated by their owners — usually large companies owning hundreds or even thousands of pubs.

British pubs are closing at the rate of 28 a week, with many tenants struggling to meet the high rents imposed by proprietors.

GMB and its pub tenant members want a statutory code enabling them to buy products on the open market and pay fair market rent.

The union delivered a letter to Downing Street yesterday detailing its proposals.

The Department for Business, Innovations and Skills consulted on a draft statutory code for tied pubs last year.

GMB organiser for tied pub tenants Steve Kemp said sky-high rents added 80p to the price of a pint of lager and 65p to ale and were “pricing pubs out of the market.”
