Spring Statement Scotland set for more insecure work under Tories

SCOTS will continue to endure “low-paid, insecure work” thanks to Philip Hammond’s Spring Statement, Richard Leonard said yesterday.

The Scottish Labour leader attacked the Chancellor for sticking to his dogma of “tax cuts for big business and the rich, and public spending cuts for the rest of us.”

He said: “It’s time the economy started working for people, rather than people working for the economy.

“A Labour government would do things differently. We would ask the richest to pay their fair share and ensure the billions we spend on procurement works for the economy, not the shareholders of big business.

“Scotland could see a stimulus of £70 billion from a Labour government in the next decade.”

Such a cash injection was set out by shadow chancellor John McDonnell at Scottish Labour’s conference last weekend.

Meanwhile shadow Scotland secretary Lesley Laird accused Mr Hammond of “breathtaking complacency.”

She said: “In Scotland, the only growth we see is in the use of foodbanks with a rise of 20 per cent in the last year, and the numbers of children living in poverty.”
