19 Scottish politicians united in calls for Westminster to save BiFab jobs

SCOTTISH politicians from five political parties have united to urge the Westminster government to help save jobs at infrastructure company BiFab.

The company notified Holyrood earlier this month of potential redundancies, with union leaders warning that 260 jobs could go by the summer.

In November, the yards were threatened with closure over a dispute with a major subcontractor on the Beatrice wind farm contract for the Cromarty Firth.

Scottish ministers brokered a deal to stave off administration until the end of the project, but BiFab said work is almost complete with no future contracts currently in place.

Nineteen MSPs from Labour, the SNP, Conservatives, Greens and Liberal Democrats have now written to British Business Secretary Greg Clark, calling for work for the Kincardine Offshore Windfarm Project be awarded to BiFab.

The letter says that the renewable energy industry could provide a “lifeline to revitalise our indigenous fabrication, engineering and steel industry base.”
