War Games Nato shows off to Russian

DEFENCE Secretary Gavin Williamson said that Britain was ready to “counter the intensifying aggression” from Russia after a naked display of force in Estonia yesterday.

The deployment of British troops to Estonia shows Nato is a “very capable force”, a senior British officer said, while admitting that Russia was not a “day-to-day” threat.

More than 800 personnel from this country are currently stationed in the Baltic state.

Major Darren Hughes said the troops were in Estonia “to show to any potential aggressor that, as a force, Nato is very capable and is prepared to deal with a whole raft of threats.”

But he added that the Russian military “are a very professional organisation. Are they a threat to us day to day? No, they are not.”

Maj Hughes also conceded that there was “no existential threat from the Russians.”

Despite making assurances to the Soviet Union in 1990, cold-war alliance Nato has continued to expand towards the country’s former borders up to the present day.
