Legal aid hypocrite Nigel Evans bemoans rape case bill

MP claims he faces 'ruin' — but voted to cut legal aid for poorest

MP Nigel Evans moaned yesterday about facing “financial ruin” after clearing his name of sex assault charges in court — despite voting to cut legal aid for Britain’s poorest.

Mr Evans was left with £130,000 bill after successfully fighting a string of sex assault allegations.

Now he has announced he will champion reforms that mean people cleared of charges are not left with crippling legal bills like his.

“The fact is that I now have an opportunity to speak out where injustices do occur,” he told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme.

“I have got a voice and there are a lot of people out there who have been equally through the mill like I have who haven’t got that voice.”

A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: “Anyone who has applied for legal aid and is subsequently acquitted of a crime is entitled to be repaid at least part of their legal cost.”
