Spycops More undercover police names come to light

TWO more cover names of undercover officers were released by the official police spying inquiry yesterday.

The inquiry has been beset with delays and is unlikely to start hearing evidence until the second half of next year.

But it has now confirmed that one officer used the false identity of John Clinton when infiltrating the International Socialists, a forerunner of the Socialist Workers Party, between 1971 and 1974.

Another officer used the name Alex Sloan while infiltrating the Irish National Liberation Solidarity Front (INLSF) between 1971 and 1973.

The INLSF was a Maoist group that organised among Irish workers in Britain and was linked to the Communist Workers League of Britain (Marxist–Leninist).

The Morning Star understands that the inquiry will publish more cover names, and possibly a handful of real names, in the coming weeks.

Officers in the Metropolitan Police’s elite undercover units are known to have adopted the identities of dead children while infiltrating left-wing groups, environmental campaigns and trade unions.
