Fire Brigades Union calls three-day strike

Action marks the next phase in fight to defend pensions

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) called three days of strikes yesterday in the next phase of its fight against Tory attacks on pensions.

Firefighters in England and Wales will strike between noon and 5pm on Friday May 2, between 2pm and 2am on Saturday May 3 and between 10am and 3pm on Sunday May 4.

There will also be an overtime ban across England and Wales from Sunday 4 May until Friday 9 May and in Scotland from Friday May 2 to Friday May 9.

The action is the latest in a three-year fight to stop Tory pension changes which will force frontline firefighters to pay more into their pension and work until they’re 68.

FBU leader Matt Wrack said Tory Fire Minister Brandon Lewis was “burying his head in the sand” over the dangers of his plans.

“Several members of government were only too keen to praise firefighters during the winter floods, but their words amount to nothing when they simultaneously ignore issues that threaten the future of firefighters and their families,” he said.
