THE People’s Assembly joined the race for the Christmas number one yesterday as it announced the release of a new anti-austerity song.

Sons and Daughters is the latest collaboration with Captain Ska, the band behind this summer’s smash hit Liar Liar GE2017.

Despite being banned from the airwaves, including BBC Radio 1’s Official Chart Show, Liar Liar GE2017 reached number four.

The People’s Assembly is aiming higher with this latest release, with the sentiment that the perfect present this year would be the “Tories out for Christmas.” It believes that supporters can help secure the Christmas number one, sending a message to Prime Minister Theresa May and her divisive party.

According to lead singer Jake Painter, Sons and Daughters reflects the “new mood of hope” following the “disastrous election for Theresa May and the Conservative Party.”

He said: “It looks like it won’t be long before we see the end of this government and it couldn’t come soon enough.

“We hope the song can give a boost to all those who have suffered under this government and who want to see a better world.”

Sons and Daughters highlights the devastating effect of Tory policies, a growth in homelessness and inequality and the song takes a swipe at the media, accusing right-wing newspapers of “poisoning our minds” to sell their “rags of hate.”

In a rallying cry it calls on people to “take control” as “the unjust order is crumbling,” featuring Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s speech at Glastonbury Festival this summer, when he declared: “Another world is possible.”

People’s Assembly national secretary Sam Fairbairn said: “The public have lost trust in this government who only care for the richest. We’ve had enough of cuts to public services, poverty wages, out-of-control rents, sky-high prices.

“It’s clear the Tories aren’t fit to govern with scandals, crisis after crisis and no leadership.

“We need a government who act in the interests of everyone, not just the corporations and the super-rich.”

Profits from sales of Sons and Daughters in the run-up to Christmas will be used by the People’s Assembly to buy supplies for foodbanks across Britain.

The single will be released on December 15, with the official Christmas number one announced on December 22, and will be up against this year’s seasonal delights, which include Last Christmas by Wham!/George Michael and the usual X-Factor release.
