Russia signs deal with Caracas to strengthen industries

VENEZUELA and Russia have signed deals to strengthen military and mining industry co-operation at a meeting in Sochi.

Venezuelan Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez said the military agreements signed on Friday covered multiple projects, including in the areas of education and special-forces operations and “logistical support for all weapons systems of the Bolivarian national armed forces.”

He said the deals were necessary “to defend ourselves and uphold the constitutional mandate to guarantee the independence and sovereignty of the country.”

This month the European Union imposed sanctions on Venezuela banning the export of arms and even police anti-riot equipment – claiming it was used to suppress democracy during this year’s opposition-fomented regime-change riots that left 124 people dead.

Mining Development Minister Victor Cano said the two countries would cover exploration and exploitation of resources, training of personnel and new business partnerships with Russian firms.
