Interim leader Rowley quits after abusive texts claims

SCOTTISH Labour interim leader Alex Rowley has stepped down from his role following claims about his conduct, the party said yesterday.

The Scottish Sun published allegations that the Mid Scotland and Fife MSP sent abusive text messages to a former partner.

He referred himself to the party’s internal complaints procedure.

In a statement, he said: “I totally refute these allegations and will take all steps necessary to clear my name.”

Voting is under way for the next Scottish Labour leader, with results to be announced on Saturday.

Former trade union organiser MSP Richard Leonard is in the running, along with Labour’s health spokesperson at Holyrood MSP Anas Sarwar.
