Denmark’s women’s team said yesterday that they were “deeply angry” after finding out their football federation cancelled Friday’s sold-out friendly against reigning European champions the Netherlands.

Talks broke down between the players union and the Danish football federation (DBU) on Sunday evening over a new pay deal.

The DBU claimed that “ultimate demands” led to the game’s cancellation. Those demands were said to be a 342 per cent wage increase on top of all players being hired.

The DBU is alleged to have offered a 46 per cent increase to the team that includes professionals and amateurs.

“The players are deeply angry and unaware that DBU has chosen to cancel the match against the Netherlands instead of negotiating,” captain Pernille Hader said.

“Players have repeatedly told DBU that they are ready to negotiate and find a solution, but there have been no negotiations [since] Monday.

“We have been very excited to play this tournament and pleased to play for our fans, so we’re annoyed by the decision taken by DBU.

“There has been a lot of time to find a solution, but [the] DBU has not wanted to negotiate since Sunday evening.

“The whole of Monday has gone without negotiations, even though we have been ready. And the next thing we hear from them is a cancellation. It seems completely incomprehensible.

“Of course, we need to have an agreement in place to play. It is not fair to call us without a deal. But we also mean that we could have found a solution.”

Harder said players were “ready to negotiate around the clock so we can get an agreement in place.”

The pay dispute puts into question next week’s World Cup qualifier against Hungary.
