Outrageous Zille gets slap on wrist

SOUTH AFRICA: The ANC slammed the opposition Democratic Alliance yesterday after apartheid apologist Western Cape province leader Helen Zille was let off with an apology.

Ms Zille tweeted on March 16 that hundreds of years of colonialism had blessed South Africa with “independent judiciary, transport infrastructure, piped water.”

DA leader Mmusi Maimane said yesterday that Ms Zille would step down from all party positions but continue as Western Cape premier until elections in 2019.

Tube cop shot in head by attacker

GERMANY: A female police officer was shot in the head at a Munich underground station yesterday after a man grabbed a colleague’s pistol and opened fire, also wounding two bystanders.

The officer’s injuries were considered life-threatening. She shot the suspect in the buttocks in the brief exchange of fire.

Authorities said that the suspect appeared to have acted out of personal reasons and ruled out terrorism.

Socialists won’t vote down Rajoy

SPAIN: Conservative Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was expected to survive a parliamentary no-confidence vote yesterday after the main opposition Socialist Party vowed to abstain.

The Podemos party proposed ponytailed principal Pablo Iglesias as a replacement for the pro-austerity People’s Party PM, now ensnared in a a corruption scandal.

The Socialists said on Monday that there was no “mature” alternative to the “reprehensible” Mr Rajoy.

Bomb attack to nudge base’s police

CYPRUS: Motorbike-mounted assailants threw a small bomb at the British Dhekelia garrison’s police headquarters yesterday, injuring an officer.

Base police at Dhekelia have been active in trying to stamp out illegal songbird trapping, which is popular with area residents and supplies an illicit restaurant trade worth millions of euros annually.
