Blackleg bribes blasted by BA crews

BRITISH AIRWAYS bosses’ bids to “bribe” cabin crew into blacklegging won’t take off, union Unite warned yesterday as workers stepped up their campaign against poverty pay.

BA’s mixed feet cabin crew launched a 14-day strike yesterday — on top of 45 days already taken — and announced they would be flying straight into another 14 days when that ends — taking their current walkout to four weeks.

They have rejected a paltry 6p per hour pay offer from BA and Unite say members are “determined” to win the dispute.

Pilots’ organisations blasted BA bosses when the firm hired nine fully staffed planes from Qatar Airways in a scab operation earlier this month.

And the Star reported last week that cabin crew were offered a £500 bonus as long as they were not a member of a trade union.

For yesterday’s lastest strikebreaking effort, BA bosses offered extra payment to staff who scab during the strike.

A message seen by the Star said: “We will make a further £250 one-off payment in August pay to all mixed fleet crew members who attend work throughout both strike periods in July.”

But Unite national officer Oliver Richardson warned that the “£250 bung” would fail.

“Such actions by British Airways will only serve to deepen the resolve of our members and the support they are receiving from the public and politicians,” he said.

Mr Richardson warned that cabin crew who are covering striking union members would be “perilously close” to their maximum flying hours and urged bosses to return to the negotiating table.

A BA spokeswoman told the Star: “The large majority of our cabin crew are working normally. We have written to them to thank them for continuing to support our customers.”
