All rise for the noble Sugar Baron at Ayr

Our tipster casts his expert eye over the pick of the weekend’s meets

Following the epic stories in both the Aintree and Irish Nationals it is the turn of Scotland with the Coral sponsored event to have its turn at Ayr with 30 runners set to go to post at 3.55 and Sugar Baron can land this nice end of season prize for Nicky Henderson.

A well regarded novice hurdler, he beat Ar Mad by 18 lengths, and is slowly getting to grips with chasing, with one win in four starts.

However, you could argue that his never-nearer sixth of 24 in the Kim Muir at the Cheltenham Festival was a career best and that the step up to four miles from three and a quarter will serve him well.

That closing sixth-place finish came off a mark of 135 and the son of Presenting has surprisingly been dropped down to 134.

If Nico de Boinville can get his partner into a good rhythm early on then I see no reason why this still unexposed sort will not play a part in the finish off his light weight.

Further up the handicap, the likes of last year’s winner Vincente, stable mate Arpege D’Alene and Premier Bond all have solid claims of one sort or another, while Battle of Siloh remains unexposed and Another Hero is capable if he puts his best hoof forward for Jonjo.

However, the biggest danger could come from Vintage Clouds who has been crying out for this test of stamina on good ground.

The remainder of the card looks just as tough, but I shall be having a few pennies on the likes of No No Mac at an eachway price in the opener at 1.40 and in the Scottish Champion Handicap Hurdle at 2.45 on Chesterfield, after the seven-year-old found his form at Aintree last time out.

The Spring Cup is the big handicap on offer at Newbury at 3.40 and Banksea looks the call here for Luca Cumani.

He was sent off favourite for the Cambridgeshire last year but ultimately was drawn on the wrong side of the track.

With a good record, fresh and surely more to come from this four-year-old, he gets the vote over Master Carpenter and Chelsea Lad.

The big race of the day at the Berkshire track is the Greenham Stakes at 3.05 and the big whisper here is for Barney Roy from the in-form Richard Hannon yard.

The son of Excelebration readily landed his only race as a juvenile at Haydock Park and although this is a big step up in grade, connections feel he has a major chance here before a shot at the 2,000 Guineas.

At Thirsk, I have been waiting for Blue Suede to run again and the youngster will line up in the 4.05 after looking as though she just needed the run at Nottingham a fortnight ago.

She should strip much fitter here and take care of Hemingway.

Over at Wolverhampton, Simon Walker can add another race to his amazing amateur winning tally by landing the opener aboard Pushkin Museum at 5.45, while have a second look at the likes of Higher Court (6.15) and Chelabella at an each-way price in the 7.45.
