HUNDREDS of oil-rig workers could down tools over bosses’ attempts to slash their pay by 30 per cent.
Unite announced yesterday it would join GMB and RMT in balloting workers against the proposals from major contractor the Wood Group.
The group has proposed to cut wages by 22 per cent, but changes to other terms make the overall package cut higher, the union says. Workers have already suffered from cuts to holiday allowances.
“Due to the intransigence of the Wood Group which is seeking to impose pay cuts of up to 30 per cent, our members have been faced with no other option but to consider strike action,” Unite officer John Boland said.
Oil prices reached a 13-year low of $30 (£20.60) a barrel in January, but have recently recovered to around $50 (£34.35).
The ballot closes on July 13, with industrial action from July 20 if the vote is successful.
