Iraq: Army pushes Isis fantatics out of central Fallujah

IRAQI troops fought their way into the centre of the Islamic State (Isis)-occupied city of Fallujah yesterday, capturing the town hall.

Special Forces Commander Brigadier Haidar al-Obeidi said his troops were now besieging the nearby central hospital, clashing with Isis snipers in adjacent buildings.

He claimed that the militants had set up a command centre on the hospital’s third floor.

“Iraqi forces are now in the centre of the city. They had not been there since the beginning of 2014,” Gen Obeidi said.

He added that Isis had “collapsed,” suggesting that most of them fled after the Iraqi forces moved in on al-Nazzal district.

nThe International Federation of Journalists joined the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate in calling for greater protection for media workers in Iraq yesterday after photographer Fadil al-Garaawi was killed by a mortar shell in Fallujah on Wednesday.
