Yes Scotland urged to reconvene for fresh vote

A FORMER SNP leader has called for official independence campaign Yes Scotland to be immediately reconvened ahead of a potential second referendum.

Gordon Wilson, who led the party from 1979 until 1990, said Yes Scotland could “mastermind the steps to bring support for independence up to 60 per cent” and “coerce the new London government to concede a fresh independence referendum.”

He said backing for independence has risen to 55 per cent following the Brexit vote, with former No voters switching sides to “safeguard our country’s position in the EU.”

“While still not at the critical level of 60 per cent that would guarantee victory, independence could be within reach” with that level of support, Mr Wilson argued.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said that a second vote is “highly likely” and has instructed officials to draft preparatory legislation for Holyrood.
