You’ve Been Trumped Too (PG)
Directed by Anthony Baxter
4/5
WITH the US presidential election just days away, a 92-year-old Scottish woman reveals the consequences of taking on billionaire Donald Trump and the reality of his bombastic broken promises in this sombre documentary.
British film-maker Anthony Baxter returned to Scotland to catch up with Molly Forbes and her family, who featured in his 2011 film You’ve Been Trumped, to discover that the feisty pensioner has had no running water for almost five years since Trump’s workmen broke the pipe that delivered her supply from the spring under his golf course near Aberdeen.
The 92-year-old, who reminds Trump of his own mother, has been living on bottled water and supplies she collects from a nearby stream, despite assurances from the Trump Organisation that they would fix the pipe.
The film follows Molly’s farmer son Michael, whose farm Trump publicly denounced as a pigsty, as he travels to the Republican convention in Cleveland, Ohio, to comprehend why the man who has made the lives of his family hell is being nominated as the Republican candidate for president.
In a Michael Moore-style move, Baxter goes to Washington to show Trump supporters in the street how Scottish people were short-changed by the mogul in a bid to change their minds about him.
He also explores the water contamination problem in Flint in the US, where residents are also forced to live on bottled water.
It is a fascinating and blistering documentary which denotes Trump’s arrogance, the outrageous promises which never materialised, the bullying, the threats and how he deals with opponents and adverse media.
Trump pledged that 6,000 jobs would be created at his golf resort in Scotland. Yet it employs less than 100 people and the film demonstrates how he has done little to nothing to appease local residents. It has all been empty pledges.
Every US voter should see this film before heading to the polls. If this is how Trump treats a vulnerable 92-year-old woman and a Scottish community, what will he do if he is handed the keys to the White House?
In Molly’s words: “I hope it doesn’t happen for America’s sake and for the world.”
