Radiographers vote to open political fund in defiance of anti-union laws

RADIOGRAPHERS are set to continue campaigning during elections in defiance of anti-union laws after their union overwhelmingly backed setting up a political fund yesterday.

Tory curbs on unions have obstructed unions’ ability to campaign and lobby the government.

But 93 per cent of Society of Radiographers members voted in favour of setting up the fund in a ballot. Turnout was 28 per cent.

“The society has never been afraid to challenge political parties, nor has it been held back from speaking out on behalf of members and patients,” said president Sheila Hassan.

“Without a positive vote, we would have lost the right to be heard.”

The decision follows a number of signs that professional associations are becoming increasingly political — including the affiliation of the National Association of Head Teachers and the Royal College of Midwives to the TUC.
