Jessy Lanza: Oh No (Hyperdub)
4/5
JESSY LANZA stands alone in recording artist history in creating what can only be described as dub R&B.
She blazed to glory in 2013 with her debut album Pull My Hair Back, described on these pages as being “like Mariah Carey down a well with Tangerine Dream.”
Latest album Oh No, inspired by Japanese outfit Yellow Magic Orchestra’s experimental pop, is no less soulful.
Glazed over with the usual electronic flourishes that make the Canadian’s sound so unique, many of the tracks exhibit more playful energy than her former release.
The track Going Somewhere is awash with rich techno sounds as Jessy repeats the refrain “say you love me” and Means I Love sounds like a love song from the future too.
It makes for a superbly oxymoronic sound, combining what’s more commonly associated with the cold and clinical with the emotional and passionate.
