Arsenal vice-captain Jordan Nobbs yesterday warned the Women’s Super League against going down the same route as its United States counterpart — which was forced to fold three years ago.
As the WSL continues to flourish, more and more players are signing full-term contracts.
But Nobbs has seen this happen before, the Women’s Professional Soccer league in the US folded in 2012 due to a lack of investment, and urged those in charge of the WSL to implement a full-proof strategy to avoid a situation where the league has to shut down.
“Naturally the clubs will spend what they want to spend and we need to hope it sustains over the future.
“It happened in [the US] — they pumped a lot of money in and then [their women’s league] folded, and that’s one thing we need to be careful with.”
On a more positive note, teammate Casey Stoney believes that today’s final will be contested by two teams who will want to succeed to make up for the disappointing season’s by their male counterparts.
Both Arsenal’s and Chelsea’s male teams will be pleased to see the back of their Premier League seasons tomorrow, after finishing the season empty-handed.
But Stoney wants to put some silverware in the trophy cabinet at Ashburton Grove so that the north London club has something to smile about over the summer.
“Both clubs are desperate for silverware, whether on the men’s side or the women’s side,” Stoney said, who turned 34 yesterday.
“Both men’s teams have missed out this season and have had, by their standards, disappointing seasons.
“I’m sure Arsenal will be desperate that we take the cup back to the club.”
