Amnesty slams rebels’ disregard for life

AMNESTY International accused rebel factions in Aleppo yesterday of “a shameful disregard for human life” in its recent targeting of the Kurdish Sheikh Maqsoud district.

And the human rights group said that jihadist forces may well have used chemical weapons earlier this year.

Two of the rebel groups — Ahrar al-Sham and Army of Islam — are represented at the shaky UN-mediated peace talks in Geneva, while others have others’ delegates representing them.

The Army of Islam issued a statement last month reporting that a field commander had deployed an “unauthorised weapon” on Sheikh Maqsoud and would be punished.

However, the jihadist group did not come clean over what chemical weapon was used.

At least 83 civilians were killed by indiscriminate shelling during attacks on the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) forces between February and April, Amnesty said.
