Magical Suarez hat-trick clinches title for Barcelona

Barcelona’s 3-0 win at Granada secured the Spanish league title for the Catalan club on Sunday, as Luis Enrique’s side retained their crown despite being run close by the two Madrid clubs.

Real Madrid also won their final game of the season, defeating Deportivo La Coruna by two goals to nil, but the destiny of the La Liga title was in Barcelona’s hands and they duly delivered.

“Throughout the season we have been at a very high level,” said Luis Enrique of his side’s league triumph.

“We have been consistent across the 38 match days and I believe that it is a deserved title because we showed that we can overcome the difficult moments. I am very happy for all of the fans, those close to us and the club.”

Barca’s three goals all came from Luis Suarez, as the prolific Uruguayan finished the season as the league’s top scorer with 40 goals, five ahead of Real’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

Luis Enrique added: “To win six out of the last eight league titles shows that the club clearly has a winning dynamic and you have to appreciate this because it is very tough to achieve.”

Across the border in Portugal, Benfica’s 12 game winning run saw them pip rivals Sporting CP to the Primeira Liga title by two points.

Their 4-1 win at home to Nacional in the final game made sure of the title. Two goals from Nicolas Gaitan helped the side from Lisbon to their important final day win.

“I want to share the victory with my players, with the president, who has always been with us, and with my coaching staff,” said Benfica coach Rui Vitoria after his side’s final game.

“It is a great delight. The secret is the unity of these players and this is for them.”

In Turkey, Besiktas won the league title with one game to go after beating Osmanlispor by three goals to one.

Fellow Istanbul side Fenerbahce were their closest challengers but they now lie six points off the top following the penultimate game.

German striker Mario Gomez scored the third Besiktas goal on the day and finished the season as the league’s top scorer with 26 goals, ahead of Antalyaspor striker Samuel Eto’o who managed 20.
