Tory privatising vultures circle Milford Haven

THE Tories have refused to give Wales control over its biggest port because they want to privatise it, Labour warned yesterday.

Responsibility for ports will be devolved to Cardiff under the government’s draft Wales Bill.

But the Tories have excluded ports worth more than £14.3 million — the exact threshold above which trust ports can be privatised under the Ports Act 1991.

Milford Haven, which receives 40 per cent of Britain’s energy supplies, is the only such port in Wales.

There is huge opposition to privatisation of the port, which is making £7.6 million profit each year for the public purse.

Tory Wales Secretary Stephen Crabb, who represents Milford Haven, has been told to come clean over his privatisation plan.

Labour’s Nia Griffith said: “Previous privatisation proposals have raised serious concerns about asset-stripping by speculators and the fragmentation of ports.

“There is no reason to believe these dangers aren’t just as real in the case of Milford Haven.”
