RECENTLY appointed Aden governor Gaafar Mohamed Saad was killed yesterday along with five bodyguards when a huge car bomb detonated as his convoy passed by.
An Islamic State (Isis) affiliate claimed responsibility for the attack, branding Mr Saad a “tyrant” and warning the leaders of “infidels” in Yemen that it would “chop off their rotten heads.” It said the bomb had been hidden in a parked car along the convoy’s route.
President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, at a meeting with a UN envoy in Aden on Saturday, signalled his agreement to peace talks with Shi’ite Houthi rebels set to begin later this month.
It was the first such meeting in the city since pro-government forces drove the Houthis out earlier this year with the help of a Saudi-led aerial onslaught.
Previous peace efforts have ended in failure.
