Lucas ‘steps back’ after Stop the War Syria statements

CAROLINE LUCAS has “stepped back” from the leadership of the Stop the War Coalition (StWC), citing concerns about statements made by the group in relation to Syria.

The Green MP confirmed yesterday that she had quit her post as a vice-president of the organisation following reports that her name no longer appeared on its website.

A spokesman for Ms Lucas said she felt is was the “responsible thing to do” because of time constraints and “in light of some recent StWC positions that she didn’t support.”

Asked to specify which positions she disagreed with, he said: “Caroline was specifically troubled by some Stop the War Coalition statements after the Paris atrocities.

“Though the pieces were subsequently taken down, she felt unable to associate herself with them.

“She was also concerned that some Syrian voices were not given an opportunity to speak at a recent meeting organised by the StWC in Parliament.”

One of the articles said that Islamic State (Isis) is “far closer to spirit of internationalism and solidarity that drove the International Brigades than Cameron’s bombing campaign.”

Ms Lucas spoke at a Stop the War rally outside Downing Street last month and will “continue to work in support of peace,” her spokesman said.

Stop the War released a statement to confirm Ms Lucas had stepped back from involvement about a month ago.

It said: “We are delighted that both Caroline and Green Party leader Natalie Bennett have spoken on Stop the War platforms since to condemn the bombing of Syria.

“We very much welcome their continued support and that of many Green Party activists.”
