Cuba calls for respect for sovereignty

CUBA’S representative to the UN urged greater respect for nations’ sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity in Geneva on Monday.

Permanent representative Anayansi Rodriguez said: “The imposition of unilateral coercive measures or sanctions which violate human rights should be set aside.

“Nobody has the right to intervene in the internal affairs of a state,” said Ms Rodriguez in her intervention in a general discussion with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Responding to allegations made against Venezuela, she stressed: “Cuba reiterates its full support and that of our people for the Bolivarian revolution, the legitimate government of President Nicolas Maduro and the heroic sister nation of Venezuela.”

Ms Rodriguez recalled that almost 10 years had passed since the UN Human Rights Council was founded to replace the old Human Rights Commission, which was accused of politicisation, double standards and selectivity, but that the same problems had taken hold in the new body.
