Journalists strike over job losses

JOURNALISTS on local newspapers in south London launched 12 days of strike action against job cuts yesterday.

Regional press group Newsquest wants to axe 14 posts at titles in the area.

The attack continues Newsquest’s wave of job cuts, targeting Bradford, York and Newcastle, among other centres.

The south London journalists, members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), voted unanimously to strike over the latest redundancies.

Titles affected include the South London Guardian series, the Surrey Comet, Elmbridge Comet and the Richmond and Twickenham Times.

Talks between the union and bosses are continuing.

Pickets were in action yesterday in Sutton, where the South London Guardian titles are based.

NUJ organiser Laura Davison said members would “make the strongest possible case to management that they have had enough of cuts, low pay and oppose the restructuring.”
