Engineers’ breakdown with rail firm Southern

ENGINEERING workers with train operator Southern are balloting on industrial action over a “comprehensive breakdown in industrial relations with the company.”

The dispute involves 200 members of rail union RMT who want a reduction in the working week to 35 hours to reward improved productivity and are also opposed to new rosters.

RMT says imposition of the rosters means fewer rest days, an increase in night work and higher productivity without reward.

General secretary Mick Cash said: “RMT will not stand by while agreed policies, procedures and agreements are unilaterally ripped up by Southern and promises on the reduction in the working week are kicked aside despite increases in productivity.

“As a result, we are now in dispute and have begun balloting of our engineering grades for industrial action.”

He said RMT members were facing a “barrage of attacks,” despite hitting work and productivity targets.

The engineering workers’ ballot closes on July 2.
