ROUND 19 of Super League XX kicked off with a highly entertaining game between Castleford and St Helens at Wheldon Road on Thursday.
Four players were making their comebacks in the game following periods on the sidelines and all four crossed for tries as the rugby league stars aligned in this dramatic match.
Justin Carney was back for Cas after 10 weeks out with a dislocated elbow, and he was the first to cross for a try, before Luke Walsh, who’d been out for over a month with an ankle injury, scored for Saints.
The first half also saw an excellent length of the field try from Tigers winger Denny Solomona, who stepped inside a covering Matty Dawson as he approached the line to finish close to the posts.
However, a try from another returnee, Joe Greenwood, and an earlier score from Alex Walmsley meant Saints went in 18-10 up at half time, with Mark Percival having converted all three of their first-half tries.
The Tigers were able to come back in the second half, outscoring St Helens by two tries to one.
A late penalty kick from Luke Gale levelled the scores at 24 apiece, but in one of the most exciting endings you’ll see to a rugby match, Castleford’s Ben Roberts was able to drop a goal with his left foot in the game’s last piece of action, giving his side a 25-24 win.
Saints’ defeat allowed Leeds to reclaim the top spot in the league after their 32-20 win at home to Hull on Sunday.
Leeds were 16-6 up at half time but Hull came back in the second half, bringing the score to 24-20 with just five minutes remaining.
As the clock ran down, a Kevin Sinfield penalty and a try from Carl Ablett which Sinfield converted, eventually secured the two points for the Rhinos.
The middle part of the Super League table is cramped, with little breathing space for the teams who find themselves in it.
Hull’s loss sees them hovering just inside the top eight, as local rivals Hull KR picked up two points at home to Warrington in a 36-10 win, meaning both Hull clubs now have 16 points.
Widnes Vikings were unable to force their way into the top eight, as they lost at home to 12-man Huddersfield Giants by 30 points to 22.
Giants second row forward Brett Ferres was sent off for a punch with just over 10 minutes gone but Huddersfield managed four converted tries in the second half to claim the victory.
Elsewhere, Wigan came back from 12-0 down to beat Salford 19-12 and Catalans Dragons defeated Wakefield by 32 points to 12 in Perpignan.
