Unaffiliated FBU and RMT back Corbyn

TWO non-affiliated trade unions formally resolved to support Jeremy Corbyn in his campaign for the Labour leadership yesterday.

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) praised the leftwinger as a “staunch defender of the rights we fight for,” while transport union RMT pledged “practical assistance” following a vote at its AGM.

Mr Corbyn has already secured the backing of train drivers’ union Aslef and the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union, both of which are Labour affiliates.

“Jeremy Corbyn should be the obvious choice for trade unions,” said FBU general secretary Matt Wrack.

“We hope that under his leadership we would see a shift in focus away from the accumulation of wealth for the few, towards policies for the majority.”

RMT general secretary Mick Cash praised Mr Corbyn’s work in his union’s parliamentary group and said his policies matched “much of RMT’s core campaigning programme.”
