Evicted group ‘forced to squat by £600 local rent’

SQUATTERS unceremoniously evicted from an east London cafe early yesterday were forced onto the streets to begin with by soaring rents.

Security firm County Enforcement emptied the former hipster cafe less than 24 hours after the homeless group moved in.

The squatters were left stranded with all their belongings in Roach Road, Hackney Wick, while heavies looked on.

A German woman who declined to be named told the Star: “I used to rent round the corner from here, but they were charging £600 a month.”

The squatters initially tried to resist the eviction. One man mounted the roof of the building, prompting security guards to call the police.

Slovakian squatter Henry said the guards had not provided any legal warrant for the eviction.

“They had some paper from the company, but they were straight away breaking the law,” he said.

County Enforcement declined to answer questions on its employees’ conduct, saying only: “There are always allegations. If there was anything unlawful we would have been arrested.”
