LONDON Pride will be “put to rest” today by a radical group of LGBT rights activists in protest over the “corporatisation” of the world-famous event.
RIP Pride will hold a mock funeral service, procession and burial symbolising the end of Pride as a political event.
Organiser Donna Riddington said: “Pride’s death knell sounded years ago as corporate institutions and multinationals began to prominently feature.
“This year is no exception, with corporate sponsors leading the LGBTQI parade, eclipsing our community and genuine supporters relegated to marching in their wake.”
Changing London Pride from a protest to a “street party” in 2004 has cost an extra £100,000 extra a year to host.
Save Queer London spokesman Dan Glass said: “The LGBTQI community and their supporters are expected to toddle along behind corporate bullies.
“At RIP Pride we will be mourning the loss of the true meaning of pride, of solidarity, protest, vision and rebellion.”
