Manchester homeless win reprieve in court

HOMELESS people occupying a protest camp in Manchester won a reprieve when a judge adjourned an attempt by council bosses to have them removed yesterday, writes Peter Lazenby.

The camp was set up on April 15 after a demonstration against Manchester City’s Council’s failure to deal with the city’s homelessness problem.

The council won a court injunction to remove the 30 campers from their first site, Albert Square, so they moved to St Anne’s Square nearby.

The council sought a new court injunction to move the homeless campers again but the court adjourned the case to August 28 in order to examine whether the campaigners could be provided with legal aid.

The protesters have won support from Manchester Community branch of union Unite.
