Four Tube unions will strike over night work

FOUR unions representing London Underground workers have now voted overwhelmingly for strike action over Mayor Boris Johnson’s grandiose plans to force overnight working on staff, writes Peter Lazenby.

Unite, representing about 250 electrical and maintenance technicians, linesmen and signallers, announced ballot results revealing 70 per cent for strike action and 84 per cent for action short of a strike in the dispute which also seeks solutions to grievances around pay, jobs and safety.

The 82 per cent turnout was far in excess of the 40 per cent minimum the government intends to impose under new anti-union laws.

London Underground’s other three unions — RMT, Aslef and TSSA — have already announced their large mandates for action.

The four unions plan to co-ordinate industrial action involving 20,000 Tube workers.

Unite regional officer Hugh Roberts said the vote was “robustly in favour of strike action and there is a strong impetus for London Underground management to reach an equitable settlement through talks at (conciliation service) Acas.”
