College lecturers walk out in protest at forced redundancy

LECTURERS at Bradford College in West Yorkshire walked out on strike yesterday in a row over job losses, writes Peter Lazenby.

The staff are members of the University and College Union (UCU), which is resisting compulsory redundancies.

A picket took place from 7.30am and there was a regional rally in nearby Leeds at lunchtime, with speeches by UCU president Liz Lawrence and Yorkshire and Humber TUC regional secretary Bill Adams.

“Colleges are experiencing some financial difficulties at the moment, but the answer is to work with us to explore all the options available, not axe staff,” said UCU general secretary Sally Hunt.

Staff at Mid-Cheshire and Barnsley colleges were due to strike yesterday, but the action was suspended after bosses caved in to union calls for no compulsory redundancies.

Ms Hunt said: “We are pleased Barnsley and Mid-Cheshire colleges responded positively and strike action won’t be necessary there.”
