Academics strike as college piles job cut upon job cut

BIRMINGHAM academic staff will strike tomorrow amid plans to abolish 34 jobs.

South and City College staff will be on the picket lines outside the Digbeth, Bordesley Green, Hall Green and Handsworth campuses from 7.30am.

The members of academics’ union UCU will then rally in the Irish Centre in Digbeth.

They are angry at the college’s proposals to make more people redundant after 13 per cent of its staff — 146 employees — had already agreed redundancy packages and were set to leave at the end of July.

Various departments will be affected, including construction, student services and supported learning — which focuses on students with learning difficulties.

The college will also cease to run courses for offenders at local prisons.

“We are talking about potential students with learning difficulties, prisoners and people who need that second chance at education missing out because of these cuts,” said UCU regional official Teresa Corr.
