Privatised drivers set to strike in living wage battle

COUNCIL drivers whose jobs were contracted out will strike for 12 hours today to back their claim for the living wage.

The drivers work for the Impact Group providing transport for people such as disabled children on a contract awarded by Croydon Council.

The council is a “living wage employer,” paying directly employed staff the London living wage of £9.15 an hour.

But “tight-fisted” Impact Group refuses to pay the minimum rate to its own staff.

Today’s strike, starting at 12 noon, will be the fourth walkout by 16 drivers and escorts, who are members of Unite.

The union says the living wage should also apply to workers employed by contractors working for the council.

Unite regional officer Onay Kasab said: “Impact is adamantly refusing to talk with Unite or even go for talks under the auspices of the conciliation service Acas.”
