South Korea: Wife of pro-reconciliation Kim Dae Jung to visit North

THE widow of former South Korean president Kim Dae Jung, who campaigned for reconciliation with North Korea, will visit the struggling country within months, it was announced yesterday.

North Korean officials and former aides to Mr Kim arranged Lee Hee Ho’s visit while meeting at the North Korean border city of Kaesong.

Kim Jong Un invited Mr Lee to visit last year after thanking her for sending flowers on the third anniversary of the death of his father, former leader Kim Jong Il.

Kim Jong Il and Kim Dae Jung held the first-ever summit between the two Koreas in 2000. Their meeting led to a series of co-operation projects, most of which which have been halted since conservatives took power in Seoul in 2008.

Mr Kim died in 2009, just three months after his successor and fellow peacemaker Roh Moo Hyun committed suicide amid a corruption probe launched by the new government.
