Plaid politician admits joy at Kinnock defeat

A SENIOR Plaid Cymru politician was criticised yesterday after saying that Labour’s 1992 general election defeat was her favourite campaign moment, writes Luke James.

Helen Mary Jones was asked for the highlight of her career in a 60-second interview for her party’s youth section.

She answered: “Um, watching Neil Kinnock’s face when he lost the Westminster election in — I think it was — 1993.”

Ms Jones had stood against Mr Kinnock in Islwyn at the ’92 election, when John Major led the Tories to a surprise victory over Labour.

She has now been selected as Plaid’s candidate in Llanelli for the Welsh Assembly election next year, when she is expecting to gain the seat from Labour.

Labour MP for Llanelli Nia Griffith branded her comment “completely bizarre,” given that Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood has ruled out working with the Tories.

Ms Griffith said: “The crushing impact that the Tories had on our communities throughout that time is something that many people, myself included, will never forget.

“That a prominent Plaid Cymru politician has confessed to supporting the Tories is a hammer blow for Leanne Wood.”
