Millwall 5-3 London Bees
by Danielle Lowe
at Beckenham Town
FLISS GIBBONS was delighted to grab a hat-trick as Millwall nullified the sting of the London Bees in their 5-3 victory in the League Cup.
The Lionesses fought back from behind three times on Wednesday night, with Ciara Sherwood and substitute Rinsola Babajide also getting themselves on the scoresheet.
Millwall’s win ended a run of four consecutive defeats and the striker was just glad to help her side get back to winning ways.
She told the Star: “Getting a hat-trick was great but it was more about the team.
“It’s great to get off to a good start. We were disappointed to not come away with three points on Sunday so this makes up for it.
“The third goal was the best. The other two were just tap-ins and it put the team in the lead.
“The gaffer talked to us at half time and we sorted it out.”
It was a thrilling match, as by the end of the first half it was 3-2 to the Bees as their recent signing Emma Whitter whizzed past the defence and keeper to get her name on the scoresheet twice.
It wasn’t just the Bees getting all the stripes of glory though as Millwall’s natural No 9 Gibbons grabbed both of their first-half goals.
And in the second half Gibbons got her paws on the hat-trick title.
Her teammate Sherwood also managed to get named among the scorers before being subbed off, with Babajide grabbing a late goal.
Millwall could have had several more goals to their name, in front of a crowd of 186, but the linesmen seemed somewhat against them, dubiously ruling several runs through on goal to be offside.
It left Millwall manager Dan Mlinar furious, who could be heard saying from the dugout: “I don’t think we have made the right pass once, in my opinion,” during the first half and “I called that [conceding a goal].”
