THE US Senate appropriations committee voted on Thursday in favour of legislation to lift a ban on travel to Cuba.
The Republican-dominated committee also backed a proposal to block enforcement of a law prohibiting banks and other businesses from financing sales of agricultural exports to the island.
The approval of the Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act was a step towards congressional approval for President Barack Obama’s policy of detente with Cuba..
The Bill will now go before the full US Senate.
Though Mr Obama announced measures relaxing travel restrictions for US nationals visiting Cuba in January, it is up to Congress to repeal the laws that underpin the blockade.
